Instead of mass applications to roles which candidates may not be passionate about and endless resume tailoring, we will connect job seekers with opportunities they’ll love and excel in, based on their interests, aspirations, skills, and experience—and, crucially, connect them with employers who are actively seeking their talent.
Our Origin Story
Upplai (pronounced apply; not ‘uppl‘ AI) was founded in late 2024 by Soubhik Dawn, a two-time founder and seasoned product management professional. Having experienced the hiring process from both sides, Soubhik witnessed its inherent inefficiencies. As a hiring manager, he saw the overwhelming volume of applications, making it difficult to identify the best fit. As a candidate, he felt the frustration of submitting countless applications, often met with instant rejection or no response at all.
When the tech layoffs of 2022 impacted friends and colleagues—some on immigrant visas facing immense pressure to find jobs quickly—Soubhik saw the need for change. He realized the hiring process wasn’t working for anyone:
- Job seekers struggle to effectively market themselves for their dream jobs.
- Hiring managers make suboptimal hires because qualified candidates are inadvertently filtered out by ATS software.
Upplai was born from a desire to bridge this gap and create a more equitable and effective hiring process.

Soubhik Dawn is a Stanford and IIT Kharagpur alumnus, a seasoned product manager, and a two-time founder. With nearly two decades of experience in tech startups and public companies, he is passionate about creating solutions that positively impact society—whether in education, career development, healthcare, wellness or sustainability.
